Hearing is one of our most important senses. We use hearing as our main method of communicating with each other. If a person experiences hearing loss it may become increasingly difficult to communicate with family, friends, and co-workers. A person with communication difficulties may experience feelings of isolation, frustration, and depression. The goal of our audiology department is to provide our patients with the highest quality of service and care. We provide education about hearing healthcare and work individually with each patient to obtain maximum hearing potential and communication goals. Hearing loss usually occurs gradually over a long period of time, and many people do not realize that they have hearing loss.
Services offered by the UAB Audiology Clinic include:
Hearing Evaluations
The objective of this evaluation is to precisely diagnose and treat the extent of hearing loss by testing both the perception of sound and the understanding of speech. This evaluation is completed in a sound treated booth, testing each ear individually
Hearing Aid Fittings
We are able to provide hearing devices for those patients who desire to improve their hearing and quallity of life. We offer a fullselection of hearing aids, ranging from analog to the most sophsticated digital technology available, as well as wireless communication.
Hearing Protection Devices
We offer custom made hearing protection devices for those patients with an active lifestyle who want to protect and conserve their hearing.
Newborn Hearing Screening
Every newborn receives a hearing screening before leaving the hospital. This test can assess the newborn's hearing without the child giving a "physical response".
Inpatient Hearing Screening
This hearing screening is done in the patient's hospital room, usually to determine the basline hearing thresholds before surgery.
