UAB is the only hospital in central Alabama to offer invasive and interventional pediatric cardiology. Our
pediatric cardiologists see some 400 patients a year including newborns, infants, children, and young adults with various types of congenital heart disease. We perform all types of diagnostic and therapeutic cardiac catheterization procedures. These include closures of patent ductus arteriosus and atrial septal defects as well as patent foramen ovales. We also perform balloon valvoplasty for congenital stenosis of the aortic and pulmonary valves for patients from newborns to young adults. Likewise, we perform balloon angioplasties and stent angioplasties in cases of congenital stenosis of the pulmonary artery and aorta. Pediatric cardiology has a procedural suite dedicated solely to the sub-specialty in the Heart and Vascular Center located in the North Pavilion.
