South of Town: The Kirklin Clinic® at Acton Road

A convenient setting for innovative cancer care

Patients who live south of town can receive UAB’s world-class cancer care in a setting close to home, at The Kirklin Clinic® at Acton Road. Located just off I-459, the Acton Road location offers the same exceptional treatment you’ll find at The Kirklin Clinic® in UAB’s Medical Center District, including a multidisciplinary approach to cancer care and a wide array of patient care services such as radiation treatment, infusion therapy, an on-site lab and more. The clinic also offers patients access to the latest clinical trials under way at UAB, including research studies dedicated to finding new treatment options for complicated and unusual forms of cancer.

The Kirklin Clinic® at Acton Road is the first facility in Alabama and only the 10th in the United States to offer the TomoTherapy® Hi-Art® (Highly Integrated Adaptive Radiotherapy) System. This advanced radiation system is the first to provide 3-D imaging immediately prior to each treatment, to verify the specific location of a patient’s tumor, which can change shape or position from day to day. The system then delivers highly targeted radiation beams to the exact tumor site, while reducing the amount of radiation to surrounding healthy tissue. The reduced toxicity and shorter treatment times with the TomoTherapy Hi-Art system lead to better quality of life for the patient.

Currently, UAB physicians are performing research in the use of TomoTherapy Hi-Art, focusing on tumors in the brain and near the spine. These studies will have application for the treatment of lung and liver tumors as well.

The cancer clinic also offers a patient education center and reference library in the waiting area, where Internet access is offered for patients seeking cancer answers. Also on site is a conference room where education seminars and support programs are conducted.
