Alexandrov Named Director of UAB Comprehensive Stroke Center

Dr. AlexandrovRay L. Watts, MD, John N. Whitaker Professor and chair of the Department of Neurology, has appointed Andrei V. Alexandrov, MD, as professor of neurology, director of the Cerebrovascular Diseases Program, and director of the UAB Comprehensive Stroke Center.

Dr. Alexandrov, an international leader in cerebrovascular ultrasound and micro-spheres technology in the evaluation and treatment of stroke, most recently was director of the Stroke Research and Neuro­sonology Program at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona.

The new appointee received his MD degree from the Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy in 1989. He specialized in clinical neurology at the Institute of Neurology, Russian Academy of Medical Sciences in Moscow, and completed his postgraduate fellowship training in stroke and cerebro- vascular ultrasound at the Neurovascular Laboratory and Stroke Research Unit of the University of Toronto, Canada, before continuing his stroke research as a fellow of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

In 1996 he joined the University of Texas stroke treatment team in Houston. There he started a teaching and research center where the skills of performance and interpretation of cerebrovascular ultrasound are taught. This teaching program is now available at the UAB Stroke Center. He has presented his research on sonothrombolysis and other aspects of emergent stroke diagnosis and treatment at numerous national and world conferences.

Dr. Alexandrov is director of the Neurosonology Examination Committee of the American Society of Neuroimaging; the founding program director of the National Stroke Symposium for continuing medical education; and a participant on several expert panels. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Neuroimaging and Stroke, and is an associate editor of the International Stroke Journal and Journal of Neuroimaging. His research has been published in major medical journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine, Circulation, Neurology, and Stroke, and he has written two textbooks on cerebrovascular ultrasound.
