Visitor Information

We welcome visitors to UAB Hospital. We will do everything we can to make your family and friends comfortable during your stay. There are certain policies that we would like to share regarding visitation that are in place to protect both the visitor and the patient.
  • In general, visiting hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Visits to the intensive car units by the immediate family are limited to brief periods. Specific times for the ICUs are available from the volunteers in the waiting areas and are also posted on the doors of the ICUs. We also ask visitors to be considerate and keep their visits brief so that patients won’t become overly tired.

  • Children younger than 12 are allowed in patient areas with the approval of the unit charge nurse and/or physician, who will schedule a time for a visit. Children who visit must be accompanied by an adult other than the patient.

  • Patients generally may have a maximum of two visitors at a time, though the rule varies according to patient status and unit. Check with the charge nurse.

  • A family member who wishes to stay beyond normal visiting hours should get permission from the charge nurse. Bringing in cots or sleeping on the floor is not permitted, but recliner chairs are available in most areas. A family member who plans to stay overnight must be of the same sex as the patient’s roommate (if in a semi-private room) and must obtain permission from the charge nurse.

  • Visitors may share the patient’s bathroom facilities, but not showers.

  • Smoking is not permitted in the hospital.

  • Visitors may not eat in the patient’s room or in waiting rooms.
