Sexual Health Clinic

UAB's Division of Urology offers a Sexual Health Clinic that provides in-depth physical and psychological evaluations and individually tailored therapy. Even though sexual disorders and dysfunction are problems in the general population, they are more prevalent in those with medical problems and are universal in certain disabled populations. The clinic offers a team approach that includes an initial evaluation by a certified sex therapist and licensed professional counselor who has had extensive training in treating sexual problems in both sexes. UAB therapists are certified by the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists.

We now know that 90% of sexual problems are organic in origin and only 10% psychological. Yet, whatever the cause of sexual dysfunction, psychological overlay usually plays a role. Mastectomy, radical prostatectomy, and chronic illnesses, such as interstitial cystitis or arthritis, can interfere with sexual intimacy, and many patients are referred to address not only the physical aspects these conditions impose on sexual function but also the psychological burden.

UAB Sexual Health Clinic focuses on male and female sexual dysfunction, including:

  • Ejaculatory control

  • Anorgasmia

  • Prostate Health

  • Disorders of sexual desire

  • Sexual trauma
