Our Core Purpose
Taking personal responsibility for identifying,
resolving, and preventing drug-related problems.
Mission Statement
The UAB Hospital Pharmacy Program will set the
national standard for pharmaceutical care delivery. This will be accomplished by
taking personal responsibility for the drug therapy needs of our patients and focusing on
achieving optimal therapeutic outcomes. We will maintain a responsive and accurate
medication dispensing system, provide education for all customers on the safe, effective
and economical use of drugs, train new practitioners in advanced pharmacy practice, and
foster research in medication use systems and appropriate therapeutics.
Philosophy of Practice
Practitioners provide comprehensive pharmaceutical care
to their specific patient population, utilizing highly-skilled technicians,
state-of-the-art drug information resources, and available technology. Our
practitioners serve as patient care experts, preceptors for students and residents,
educators, consultants, and supervisors of the medication use process.
Inpatient Practice
At the 908 bed University Hospital, practitioners
provide comprehensive pharmaceutical care, supported by computerized physician order
entry, well-trained professional technicians, and 14 satellites.
Ambulatory Care
Practitioners provide prescription services for four
outpatient pharmacies and also manage patient care clinics in anticoagulation, HIV
therapy, transplantation, and internal medicine.
Therapeutic
Policy Management
This division is responsible for Pharmacy and
Therapeutics Committee management, medication error evaluation, ADR reporting, drug
information support for our pharmacists and other health care providers, clinical research
coordination, and MUE program management.
Educational
Programs
We offer ASHP-accredited residency programs in Pharmacy
Practice and Drug Information and provide numerous clerkships for Samford University's
Doctor of Pharmacy program. Practitioners routinely provide therapeutic lectures to
physicians, nurses and other healthcare providers. Patient and public education is
of utmost importance.
