The UAB Center for Low Vision Rehabilitation is a collaborative effort between the Department of Ophthalmology and the School of Optometry to provide rehabilitation services to persons with vision loss. The Center, located in the Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital on the UAB campus, provides optometry, ophthalmology, occupational therapy and counseling services. Persons referred to the Center receive a comprehensive low vision exam from a low vision optometrist or ophthalmologist and extensive rehabilitation services through occupational therapy. The Center is experienced in treating vision loss from many conditions including macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, stroke, and brain injury.
Our services determine whether you will benefit from use of a magnifier, prescribe the best magnifier to meet your needs, and train you to use it in daily activities. We will teach you to use your remaining vision as efficiently as possible to complete the daily activities that are important to you. We will show you how to modify daily activities so they can be completed with less vision and teach you to use adaptive equipment to compensate for vision loss if needed. We can help you modify your home or work environment to increase your safety and independence. We can provide counseling if you are having difficulty adjusting to the challenges of living with vision loss. We will also address driving and return to work. Our services are covered by Medicare and most other carriers.
