Center for Metabolic Bone Disease (CMBD)

The Center for Metabolic Bone Disease (CMBD) provides a broad-based multidisciplinary research, training, and service center with focused on metabolic bone disease with a special interests in the support and integratatin of clinical activities, clinical research, basic research, and education. These activities will be incorporated into a comprehensive program, emphasizing the critical interface between basic and clinical research. Educational activities will characterize all components, including education for the patients, the general public, medical students, paramedical personnel, graduate students, and physicians in practice.

The goals of the Center are to:
  • Provide a multidisciplinary Osteoporosis Prevention and Treatment Center at the Kirklin Clinic which will deliver state-of-the-art patient care in the geographic region


  • Enhance ongoing bone metabolism research and to stimulate new research through multidisciplinary interactions


  • Improve existing facilities and establish new shared resource facilities for investigators studying metabolic bone diseases


  • Promote an educational initiative in the field of osteoporosis for the medical community, as well as for patients and the community at large


  • Provide efficient administrative and fiscal support.
Since its inception, a comprehensive multi-disciplinary osteoporosis clinic is being successfully operated, representing a prototype for UAB, core facilities to support research and education have been developed, clinical trials have increased, and new faculty in basic bone biology, biomedical engineering and clinical research have been recruited.
