Research and Clinical Trials

UAB neurosurgeons and radiation oncologists are actively involved in diverse research and clinical trials to find new and superior radiosurgical treatments and ways to use radiosurgery as a complement to traditional treatments. These respected experts are working to maximize the effectiveness of treatments while minimizing the total dose administered, which will also minimize the overall odds of harming adjacent normal tissues.

Currently, UAB is actively involved in clinical trials that are investigating the utility of Gamma Knife use in combination with other types of therapies. There are a number of radiosurgical clinical trials underway for lesions outside the brain, including the use of radiosurgery for lesions in the spine, liver, lung and pancreas.

Ongoing research is also being conducted on patients who have undergone Gamma Knife treatment at UAB, to determine ways to maximize the effects of the treatment, maintain patient quality of life and improve outcomes.

UAB’s cutting edge research places it as a national leader in providing excellent radiosurgical management of a wide variety of problems, as well as advancing the future of radiosurgery.
