After receiving her ASN from Miami-Dade Community College in North Miami in 1970, Broner held positions of Staff Nurse, Team Leader, Assistant Head Nurse and Clinical Education coordinator at several hospitals. She held the position of Staff-Nurse-Midwife/Clinical nurse Specialist II for five years at the Tennessee Department of Public Health while continuing her training.

During 1982-1986, Broner lived in West Virginia, where she served as Birth Center Coordinator at the Women’s Health Center of West Virginia-Charleston. During her stay, she was the first nurse midwife to receive hospital privileges in the State of West Virginia. She received her BA from West Virginia State College Institute. After moving to Alabama and working two years as Nurse-Midwifery Coordinator at the Northeast Regional Medical Center, she came to the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1989 and accepted the position of Clinical Coordinator in the Nurse-Midwifery Section of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine. She has been a nurse-midwife in the UAB Department of Family and Community Medicine since December 1996. In 1997, Broner became the first nurse midwife to receive prescription-writing privileges in the State of Alabama and the first nurse midwife to receive privileges from University Hospital. She is actively involved in the Alabama State Nurse’s Association and the American College of Nurse-Midwives. She is a member of the Joint Committee for Advanced Nursing Practice for the State of Alabama and is a state coordinator in the cardiovascular health for women educational program sponsored by the Association for Women of Obstetrics & Neonatal Nursing.

She was selected as the 2002 Outstanding Maternal Child Health Nurse of the Year for the State of Alabama.

A Native of The Netherlands, Broner loves to ride a bike and walks a lot. She is an avid swimmer, especially in warm water and enjoys the “quiet” time from her gardening. Her husband is also in the medical field and they reside in Homewood, Alabama. They have two adult children and one grandchild.
