Evaluation for Liver Transplant
The evaluation process provides information to determine the most appropriate treatment for the patient with end stage liver disease. Potential candidates are referred by their physicians. During an initial consultation the patient meets with various members of the transplant team who review medical and social histories. Potential candidates will also undergo a series of outpatient exams to determine candidacy for liver tranplantation.
A list of studies done to determine candidacy for transplantation follows:
-
Chest X -ray
-
Pulmonary Function studies
-
Electrocardiogram
-
Echocardiogram
- Cardiac evaluation
-
Doppler ultrasound of the liver
-
Cat scan
-
MRI
-
Bone scan
-
Blood tests
-
Renal function studies
-
Psychological evaluation
When the tests are completed, the results help the team determine which treatment options are appropriate. Choices range from medical management, investigational protocols offering new therapies, liver surgery or transplantation.
