UAB has one of the largest
Kidney Transplant Programs in the country. Full-time transplant surgeons, nephrologists, nurse clinicians, social workers, pharmacists and dietitians compose the transplant team. To date, UAB transplant specialists have performed over 5,000 kidney transplants.
The criteria for accepting a patient as a potential transplant candidate have broadened considerably in recent years thanks to increased patient and graft survival and decreased morbidity. Patients between the ages of one and sixty-five may be considered for transplant evaluation, although in certain circumstances associated diseases will prevent kidney transplantation. Occasionally patients in good health up to age seventy-one have been accepted. All potential candidates are admitted to the transplant service at UAB for a brief evaluation.
