UAB has established a clinic to make first trimester screening and comprehensive integrated screening available to patients. The clinic is conveniently located at our Center for Women's Health at 1500 6th Avenue South, with free, ample and adjacent parking.
If you are interested in having first trimester screening or integrated screening performed, your physician's office can schedule an appointment with UAB Maternal-Fetal Medicine physicians by calling (205) 934-2179.
Each patient will receive comprehensive genetic counseling, an ultrasound for measurement of the nuchal translucency, and blood will be drawn for maternal serum market measurements. For patients who have first trimester screening, results will be available within 5-7 days. At each patient's first trimester screening visit we will discuss her interest in integrated screening.
Patients opting to have comprehensive or serum integrated screening will need to have a second maternal blood specimen obtained at 15-18 weeks before a risk estimate can be calculated. This specimen does not need to be collected at UAB, however. It can be obtained at a physician's office and simply mailed to our laboratory for measurement. At the time of her visit, we will provide each patient with specific instructions regarding the timing of the blood draw and sample submission. Within 5-7 days of receipt of the quad screen specimen by our laboratory, results will be forwarded to the physician's office.
