The New South is a region which is developing rapidly toward the future, but at the same time honors the past. Few cities have achieved this equilibrium between innovation and respect for customs and local heritage as has Birmingham, Alabama.
Birmingham has always been a vibrant city. Founded in 1871 as a center of steel production, it rapidly appeared on the map, growing and becoming the largest city in the State of Alabama,
thereby earning the name “The Magic City.” Today
its economy has been diversified – it is a center of research,
development, and advanced technology. The University of
Alabama in Birmingham, UAB, is the largest employer in the
city and after the federal government, the largest employer
in the State of Alabama.
Although Birmingham is growing rapidly, it still enjoys
the tranquil rhythm of life characteristic of towns and cities
of the Southern United States, which makes it a very
attractive place to live and visit. Visitors and residents
enjoy the large quantity of parks and wooded areas, the
museums, and historical and recreational sites . The city offers cultural events and excellent commercial centers as well as beautiful residential zones. Extending over rolling terrain covered with forests and lakes, Birmingham has an agreeable climate during the entire year.
But perhaps what most impresses a visitor to Birmingham
is the warmth, friendliness, and hospitality typical of the
South. Our patients observe this in their relations with
the doctors, the nurses, and even with passersby in the streets,
which makes their visit to the Magic City a pleasant and
unforgettable experience.
