Emergency Transportation

  • For extremely ill patients who are in the intensive care unit or who need emergency transportation, the Medical Center at UAB offers a special transport service which is available 24 hours a day every day of the year.

  • The emergency transport system, an airborne intensive care unit, allows the transporting of the patient and a companion from any hospital in the world to UAB Medical Center. The Lear jet, with transcontinental capacity, permits the rapid and safe transporting of the patient. On land, the UAB Medical Center employs mobile units of intensive care to carry the patient from the airport to the hospital.

  • ·The service includes a group of specialists of the UAB Medical Center: a physician, an intensive care nurse, and a respiratory therapist. The team is selected according to the needs of the patient, depending on whether it is a clinical, surgical, or neonatal case.

  • The attending physician in the country of origin should coordinate transportation by ambulance from the hospital to the airport. The International Office will assist in coordinating emergency transportation.

  • For more information, call collect to the Office of International Patients (205) 943-2096, or send a fax to (205) 975-5940.
