Activities Of Pharmaceutical Vendor Representatives

                      

Pharmaceutical Vendor Representatives (PVR) may provide useful medication information or other services in some situations. However, these activities should not interfere with the provision of patient care, compromise the confidentiality of patient information, and should not undermine decisions of the medical staff regarding formulary product selection or medication use.  PVRs may be employed by a manufacturer, repackager, or wholesaler of pharmaceutical products.

 

The following guidelines shall apply:

 

1.      PVRs shall conduct themselves as professionals in all interactions with hospital or medical staff.

2.      PVRs shall limit their activities to non-patient-care areas.

3.      PVRs may not contact practitioners who are in patient care areas.

4.      PVRs shall wear appropriate identification, including company name, at all times while in the hospital and associated clinics.

5.      PVRs must obey corporate compliance guidelines concerning gifts and other services.

6.      PVRs shall refrain from promoting non-formulary medications for use within this institution.

7.      PVRs shall make appointments with practitioners and staff prior to entering the institution.

8.      PVRs shall conduct in-services, displays, etc., only in non-patient-care areas.

 

Additionally, PVRs shall not make references or statements to practitioners concerning the following:

·        pricing of competitor products

·        stocking of product by Pharmacy Department

·        status of a pending formulary review by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
