"Atmospheric humidity decreases in the winter, and dry skin can become more of a problem. One way to overcome this uncomfortable problem is to make use of lanolin-containing moisturizers. Lanolin is classified as a wax ester and functions as an occlusive moisturizer, meaning it prevents water from evaporating to the environment, said UAB dermatologist Amy Theos, M.D. “Such products can have a beneficial effect on dry skin.
One caution: some people are allergic to lanolin. Don’t use this type of product if red, itchy skin results, and patch-testing by a dermatologist confirms the allergy.” Fortunately, there are alternatives: petrolatum, dimethicone (a silicone oil) and propylene glycol also help retard water loss, she said.
