Video-assisted procedure offers shorter recovery time
Innovations available at UAB allow many patients with certain thyroid illnesses to have same-day outpatient surgery and recover faster.
For thyroid patients requiring surgery who must meet certain criteria, the new minimally invasive video-assisted thyroidectomy has several advantages over the current standard treatment. The newer endoscopic technique uses a smaller incision, which creates a smaller scar that heals faster. It also is performed as outpatient surgery, reducing hospitalization and allowing patients to return to their normal lives sooner. The traditional surgery may require a one- or two-night hospital stay.
The newer minimally invasive videoassisted thyroidectomy is only appropriate for patients with normal to slightly enlarged thyroid glands and small- to medium-sized nodules. It’s also applicable for patients with small thyroid malignancies and those needing evaluation for suspicious nodules. It doesn’t replace the traditional technique, which is still necessary for patients with large goiters, inflammatory conditions and hyperthyroidism. However, about 15 percent to 20 percent of patients with thyroid illnesses requiring surgery usually qualify for the newer technique.
