UAB physicians lead a list of the “Best Doctors in America” from the Birmingham metro area, and are some of the most trusted by their own peers, according to a national survey of physicians.

This year’s list by Best Doctors, an independent medical referral service, named 234 specialists at UAB, which comprises a full two-thirds of the total 345 local physicians named. UAB physicians consistently make a strong showing in this annual ranking. Only about 3 percent to 5 percent of specialists worldwide make the prestigious list.

The “Best Doctors in America” survey asks peer physicians: “If you or a loved one needed a doctor in your specialty, to whom would you refer them?” Nominations are anonymous and doctors’ evaluations are confidential. The results show the confidence and trust other physicians place in UAB’s specialists.

UAB physicians on the current list represent a wide range of specialties, including cardiology, neurology, pulmonary, oncology, rheumatology, surgery, urology, and obstetrics and gynecology.
