Expert Prenatal Screening Available at UAB

Testing for chromosomal abnormalities gives parents-to-be peace of mind

Expectant mothers can turn to UAB for precise prenatal screening techniques that improve accuracy and frequently lessen the need for more invasive testing that’s often involved in more traditional screening techniques.

UAB is the only hospital in the state offering a comprehensive first trimester screening and diagnostic program. This program uses specialized ultrasounds and maternal hormonal blood tests to better assess the risk of common birth defects and chromosomal abnormalities, including Down syndrome. Second trimester screening tests can assess the risk of neural tube defects, such as spina bifida, in addition to chromosome abnormalities and abdominal wall defects.

UAB’s new integrated screening program combines test results from the first and second trimesters, producing the best possible assessment of birth defect risk as well as fewer false-positive results.

Screening tests alone aren’t conclusive, but they can help the physician and patient decide if it’s advisable to proceed with more extensive and invasive diagnostic testing, such as amniocentesis. The more accurate the initial screening tests are, the fewer secondary diagnostic tests will be needed.

UAB’s screening and diagnostic tests are performed by nationally certified Maternal-Fetal Medicine physicians, ensuring that measurements are performed properly and improving the accuracy of the results.

There is a 2 percent to 4 percent chance of birth defects in any pregnancy. Screening and diagnostic tests can offer parents peace of mind, or give both the patient and physician time to prepare and do everything possible to improve the outcome of the pregnancy. It is also an excellent option for women who are 35 or older or who have had a prior child with birth defects and may be looking to avoid an amniocentesis.

Patients need a physician referral for UAB’s prenatal screening programs and should talk with their doctor and check with their insurance provider before scheduling.
