Fay Fletcher Kerner Professor of Surgery and Chairman of UAB's Department of Surgery Kirby I Bland, MD, announces the appointment of transplantation surgeon Alan M. Hawxby, MD, as assistant professor.
Dr. Hawxby completed a BS degree in biochemistry with honors at Oklahoma State University, and then graduated magna cum laude with a BS degree in chemical engineering from the University of Missouri. He completed his MD degree at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. After finishing surgical residency at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, he completed a 2-year abdominal organ transplantation fellowship at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.
Dr. Hawxby has been the recipient of a variety of awards, including a 2003 Wyeth Pharmaceuticals Education Award for Teaching Excellence, in addition to coauthoring book chapters, abstracts, and peer-reviewed journal articles.
Dr. Hawxby's clinical interests center on abdominal organ transplantation and procurement, dialysis access, general surgery in dialysis patients, and incompatible kidney transplantations.
