UAB Synopsis Vol. 24, No. 13, April 11, 2004
The American Medical Association (AMA) has unveiled principles and guidelines for formation and implementation of pay-for-performance programs (PFP) under study by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. "Pay-for-performance programs may serve as a positive force in the health-care industry if they are designed primarily to improve effectiveness and safety of patient care," AMA Secretary John H. Armstrong, MD, says. Physician participation should be voluntary and PFP programs should be based on accurate data and fair reporting.
