Clyde Guss Cox, died at age 100, April 30, 2006. Cox was Chief Administrator for the Birmingham Veteran’s Affairs (VA) Hospital for almost 20 years. Instrumental in the early growth of the UAB medical center, he established a number of mutually beneficial programs between the VA and UAB medical center. Alabama’s first kidney transplant was performed at the VA on May 8, 1968 by Arnold G. Diethelm, MD, while veterans requiring heart surgery underwent operations at UAB. The university awarded Cox an Honorary Masters of Arts degree in 1972.
