US News & World Report ranked 7 of UAB Hospital’s specialty programs among the top 50 — 5 in the top 25 — in the country in its 2006 17th annual “America’s Best Hospitals” issue. The magazine evaluated 16 programs at 5189 hospitals.
The magazine ranks institutions through measurements gathered from 3 major elements: reputation, mortality, and quality-of-care measures such as nurse-to-patient ratio and number of key technologies available.
UAB Hospital specialities among the top 25 rankings included:
• Rheumatology ranked sixth nationally for the 15th consecutive year.
• Heart and heart surgery ranked 14th for the 11th consecutive year.
• Gynecology ranked 14th.
• Nephrology ranked 17th.
• Oncology ranked 23rd.
Orthopedics ranked 47th and Respiratory disorders ranked 48th.
