Standaert Joins Neurology

Professor and Chair of the Department of Neurology Ray L. Watts, MD, announces the appointment of David G. Standaert, MD, PhD, as the John T. and Juanelle D. Strain Professor of Neurology and director of the newly established Center for Neurodegeneration and Experimental Disorders within the department.

A magna cum laude graduate of Harvard University, Boston, MA, Dr. Standaert graduated from the Washington University School of Medicine’s Medical Scientist Training Program in St. Louis with an MD degree and a PhD degree in pharmacology.

He completed a residency in neurology at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and a research and clinical fellowship in movement disorders at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, where he was associate professor of neurology before moving to UAB.

His research interests focus on function of the basal ganglia, basal ganglia diseases, and neuropharmacology. As director of the American Parkinson Disease Association Advanced Center for Parkinson Research at Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Standaert’s laboratory was exploring the root causes of Parkinson’s disease as well as the origin of disabling symptoms that appear after long-term treatment of the disease.
