UAB contracts directly with payors such as indemnity insurance
companies, reinsurance companies, Preferred Provider Organizations
(PPOs), Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), medical practices,
hospitals, Physician- Hospital Organizations (PHOs), and self-insured
employers.
OUR OBJECTIVES:
- to strategically position UAB Medical Center as a regional
and national referral center of choice in an increasingly competitive
health services environment.
- to generate revenue for UAB Hospital and its medical staff,
the Health Services Foundation (HSF), by negotiation of high-volume,
high-quality directed care contracts for all Medical Center services
including organ and bone marrow transplants, general medical care,
workers compensation health care, cardiovascular surgery, and
psychiatric care.
WHAT WE DO:
Negotiation
- We serve as primary client contacts to initiate quality, high-volume
direct contracts.
- We develop and execute negotiation strategies that respond
to the business and pricing expectations of individual clients
and to requirements of UAB Medical Center.
- We negotiate contract language and provisions, reaching consensus
with UAB Medical Center counsel representing risk management,
the hospital, and the Health Service Foundation.
- We negotiate the financial term of contracts to include consensus
with the Contract Review Committee, which includes the executive
administrators of the Departments of Medicine, Surgery, Anesthesia,
Radiology, and Hospital Finance.
Financial Analysis
- We develop pricing strategies to maintain UAB's competitiveness
in the regional and national marketplace and generate appropriate
margins.
- We analyze financial proposals from clients to assess the
contract assets and liabilities to UAB and to negotiate through
barriers to contracting.
Promotion
- We initiate UAB's response to clients'' requests for proposals and clinical information, requesting and consolidating data from
appropriate hospital and HSF personnel.
- We serve as the source of information to clients and
in-house personnel for UAB services and pricing related to managed
care contracting.
- We compile, present, and update clinical data to promote UAB
Medical Center's experience, quality, and pricing.
Pricing - We have developed unit pricing for transplants--heart, lung, liver, kidney, kidney/pancreas, and bone marrow; package pricing for cardiovascular surgery; and per diems--hospital, worker's comp, rehabilitation, and psychiatric services. We also negotiate capitated contracts.
