Department of Medicine Chair Edward Abraham, MD, announces the appointment of Robert H. Carter, MD, as director of the Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology. Carter, professor of medicine and microbiology, directs UAB’s Arthritis Center Flow Cytometry Core, Rheumatic Disease Core, and Autoimmunity Center of Excellence. He succeeds Robert H. Kimberly, MD, the Howard L. Holley Research Chair in Rheumatology, who will continue in his roles as UAB senior associate dean for research and director and senior scientist in the Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases Center.

“The Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology has been a strong force at UAB for many years,” Carter says. “My task is to promote the division’s recognized excellence in clinical care, education, and research.” Carter’s active research laboratory focuses on molecular mechanisms of control of B-cell responses and investigates abnormalities in B-cell receptors in lupus and rheumatoid arthritis with the goal of identifying new therapeutic targets.
