Hawn Heads GI Surgery

Dr. HawnDepartment of Surgery Chair Kirby I. Bland, MD, announces the appointment of Mary T. Hawn, MD, MPH, as Chief of the Section of Gastrointestinal Surgery. “Hawn’s extraordinary technical and clinical skills in gastrointestinal surgery make her ideally suited to lead this prestigious section in the Division of General Surgery,” Bland says.

Hawn also serves as associate program director of the general surgery residency training program and as codirector of the Alabama Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery. She is the physician director for UAB’s participation in the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program, and she serves as a mentor to surgical residents participating in the T32 Health Outcomes Research Training Program.

Hawn received her BS and MD degrees from the University of Michigan Medical Center, where she also pursued an MPH in epidemiology. At University of Michigan Hospitals she completed her surgical internship and residency, including a research fellowship in colorectal tumor genetics. She completed a laparoscopic fellowship at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland before joining UAB in 2001.
