UAB Highlands. The UAB Pain Treatment Clinic offers a multidisciplinary approach

The UAB Pain Treatment Clinic has recently relocated to UAB Highlands. Patients with chronic pain will receive the same exceptional treatment they've always expected from UAB physicians, now in a more convenient setting. The new location, adjacent to the UAB Highlands ER on 11th Avenue South between 12th and 13th Streets, offers easy access and free parking in the parking deck on 12th Street.

The UAB Pain Treatment Clinic provides care for patients who suffer from pain due to a variety of causes, especially neck and lower back pain and cancer pain. Physicians at the clinic include anesthesiologists
and physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists; all physicians are board-certified in pain medicine.
The orthopaedists and surgeons who treat chronic pain are also conveniently located at UAB Highlands.

A Team Approach to Treatment

Chronic pain can reduce energy, magnify stress and cause depression. For that reason, UAB physicians take a multidisciplinary approach. Treatments available at the UAB Pain Treatment Center include surgical or nonsurgical interventional procedures; physical, occupational and psychological therapy; and behavior
modification.

Physicians work closely with patients and their families to determine the best course of treatment. If pain medication is required, UAB physicians collaborate with the patient's referring physician to optimize medication.

Conquering Pain

Physicians at the pain management clinic encourage lifestyle changes such as weight loss and exercise to help manage pain.

Weight greatly affects back and neck pain as well as general health. Cessation of tobacco use also is encouraged. If people can improve their overall health, many forms of chronic pain can be diminished.

Physicians at the UAB Pain Treatment Clinic emphasize that it is important to understand that there are many options available today for the treatment of pain.

The UAB Pain Treatment Clinic treats pain from a wide variety of causes, including:

  • Cancer

  • Arthritis

  • Neck and lower back conditions

  • Pain in the extremities

  • Headaches

  • Myofascial pain

  • Herpes zoster (shingles)

  • Neuralgia

  • Postsurgical pain

  • Diabetic neuropathy

  • Interstitial cystitis (irritation of the bladder wall)
