Dobelbower Joins Radiation Oncology

Dr. DobelbowerProfessor and Merle M. Salter Chair of Radiation Oncology James A. Bonner, MD, announces the appointment of M. Christian Dobelbower, MD, PhD, as assistant professor of radiation oncology.

Dr. Dobelbower earned his PhD in nuclear engineering from the Ohio State University in Columbus where he also was a research associate in the nuclear engineering program. During this time he patented a circular, confined distribution for charged particle beams.

Dr. Dobelbower earned his MD degree at the Medical College of Ohio. He completed an internship at Mercy Health Partners in Toledo, Ohio, and a residency in radiation oncology at UAB.

He is a member of the American Brachytherapy Society, the American College of Radiology, and the American College of Radiation Oncology.

Dr. Dobelbower’s clinical interests include the study and treatment of gastrointestinal malignancies and head and neck cancers.

During his residency he and colleagues published on the use of erlotinib (an anti-EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor) as a radiosensitizer in esophageal cancer cell lines. This work led to a clinical trial for esophageal cancer patients at UAB. In addition, he has an interest in image-guided radiotherapy and radiosurgery.
