UAB Professor and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics Sergio Stagno, MD, announces the appointment of Randy Q. Cron, MD, as associate professor of pediatrics specializing in rheumatology.
Dr. Cron’s specific research interests include transcription and regulation of cytokine genes and HIV-1 long-terminal-repeat activity in primary CD4 T lymphocytes as it relates to autoimmunity and immunodeficiency; diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular joint arthritis in juvenile idiopathic arthritis; and diagnosis and treatment of macrophage activation syndrome in pediatric rheumatic disorders.
Dr. Cron earned a PhD in immunology from the University of Chicago and an MD degree from the University of California at Los Angeles. He completed a pediatric internship and residency at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford Hospital, California, and a pediatric rheumatology fellowship at Children’s Hospital and Medical Center, University of Washington, Seattle. He was a Howard Hughes Medical Institute postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University Medical Center.
Dr. Cron is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric rheumatology. He comes to UAB from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where he was assistant professor of pediatrics.
He has received numerous awards, including the American College of Rheumatology/Merck Senior Scholar Award, Stanford University Medical Center’s Child Health Research Center Scholar Award, and the Arthritis Foundation Investigator Award. He is an Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation Scholar, an NIH reviewer of several grants and programs, and a member of the US Immunodeficiency Network Consortium Scientific Review Committee.
In addition to authoring numerous peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, abstracts, and presentations, he is an international lecturer and offers a wealth of teaching experience: He was course director and lecturer for several graduate courses in immunology and fellowship director during his early years in Philadelphia.
Dr. Cron was an advisory editor or editor for numerous journals and is currently an editor for Pediatric Rheumatology, Journal of Immunology, and Arthritis and Rheumatism.
He is accepting physician-referred pediatric patients with known or suspected rheumatic disease at the pediatric rheumatology clinic at Children’s Park Place, 1601 4th Ave S.
