UAB Synopsis, Vol. 27, No. 17, May 5, 2008
The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) and the American Diabetes Association (ADA) have recognized Stephen W. Stair, MD, FACP, assistant professor, Division of General and Internal Medicine, for providing quality diabetes care. The Diabetes Physician Recognition Program, which measures performance in key areas of diabetes care, is designed to improve the quality of patient care.
“Diabetes care is one of the top priorities for Medicare as well as other insurance carriers,” Dr. Stair says. “In fact, Blue Cross of Alabama recently began a pay-for-performance initiative based on this recognition program, so we hope other physicians will take time to obtain certification.”
One of only four Alabama physicians recognized by the program, Dr. Stair says primary care physicians and endocrinologists would benefit from participation.
Dr. Stair received his undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee and earned his MD degree from the University of Tennessee School of Medicine, Memphis. He completed an internal medicine residency at UAB and joined the faculty in 2003 following several years in private practice. He is Medical Compliance Officer for the University of Alabama Health Services Foundation. He sees patients at The Kirklin Clinic® and may be contacted at sstair@uabmc.edu.
The NCQA is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving health care quality. The ADA is the nation’s leading voluntary health organization supporting diabetes research, information, and advocacy.
