The United States Adopted Name Council, which consists of representatives from the AMA, APhA, USP, FDA, and a member-at-large, works with the World Health Organization to set rules for naming drugs. It also establishes new drug names, generally after the manufacturer submits a drug to the FDA as an investigational new agent. The rules for naming drugs are typically based on their chemical structure, therapeutic indication, or mechanism of action. View the rules at:
