The International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE) recently elected Peter G. Anderson, DVM, PhD, professor of pathology and director of Pathology Undergraduate Education, to a 3-year term on its board of directors. He also is pre-clerkship curriculum coordinator (Joint Health Sciences) for the new School of Medicine curriculum.
Dr. Anderson, a charter member of IAMSE, served a previous term on the board, as well as on a program planning committee, as chair of the technology committee, and most recently as vice president. He also is active on the National Board of Medical Examiners, currently serving as chair of its pathology committee. In addition, he is president of the Course Directors Section of the Association of Pathology Chairs.
Dr. Anderson received a BA degree in zoology from the University of Washington, a DVM degree from Washington State University, and his PhD degree from UAB. He joined the faculty in 1986 following completion of the NIH Veterinary and Comparative Pathology Residency Program of UAB and Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine.
His major area of research is cardiovascular pathophysiology with special emphasis on animal models of human disease. In addition to his primary research into altered bioenergetics in cardiac hypertrophy, he is involved in collaborative research activities on the vascular reaction to mechanical injury and intravascular stents, pulmonary hypertension, and transplant vasculopathy.
Dr. Anderson is active in educational pursuits, most notably in using technology to enhance teaching and learning. He is a frequent guest speaker on issues related to Web-based instruction. He also participates in faculty development courses locally and nationally, primarily related to copyright issues and Web-based teaching.
IAMSE was founded in 1977. It is based on the principle that all who teach the sciences fundamental to medical practice should have access to the most current information and skills needed to excel as educators.
