Nine of UAB’s most influential leaders were inducted into the Alabama Healthcare Hall of Fame during a ceremony on March 24 in Montgomery. The Alabama Healthcare Hall of Fame was founded in 1997 to recognize the role of health care in Alabama and to celebrate outstanding contributions made to the state of Alabama.
Since its inception, the Healthcare Hall of Fame has inducted 33 honorees. It is the first and only statewide healthcare hall of fame in the nation.
The UAB inductees are: Wayne H. Finley, MD, PhD, and Sara Crews Finley, MD — Co-founders of the UAB Laboratory of Medical Genetics
Linna H. Denny, RN — “Pioneer” of Alabama nursing
S. Richardson Hill, Jr., MD — Former dean of the UA School of Medicine and past president of UAB
Howard L. Holley, MD — Medical historian and noted rheumatologist/teacher
Sandral Hullett, MD, MPH — UAB alumna and Trustee of the University of Alabama System
John W. Kirklin, MD — Chairman of UAB Department of Surgery for 16 years and renowned cardiothoracic surgeon
James A. Pittman, MD — Served as dean of the UA School of Medicine for 19 years
Richard E. Powers, MD — Advocate of mental health services for geriatric patients in Alabama and creator of the UAB Brain Bank
