CARDIOTHORACIC SURGERY

Constantine L. Athanasuleas, MDConstantine L. Athanasuleas, MD, has accepted an appointment as professor of surgery in the Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery. He comes to UAB from Physicians Medical Center Carraway where he has practiced since 1982. Athanasuleas received his MD degree from the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago. He completed an internship, general surgery residency, and thoracic and cardiac surgery residency at Stanford University. He is board certified in thoracic surgery.

Athanasuleas has been the chair of the Alabama Quality Assurance Coronary Bypass Cooperative Study since 1997. He has been a member of the Cooperative Study of Ventricular Restoration in Ischemic Cardiomyopathy Group since 1998 and focuses his research primarily on surgical ventricular restoration, an operation for congestive heart failure following myocardial infarction. His other clinical interests include complex adult cardiac surgery and mitral valve repair procedures.

GERIATRICS

Erum Jadoon, MDErum Jadoon, MD, has accepted an appointment as assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care. She received her medical degree from the Aybu Medical School, Abbottabad, Pakistan. Jadoon completed her internal medicine residency at Nassau University Medical Center, State University of New York at Stony Brook, where she served as chief resident. She completed a fellowship in geriatrics at Parker Jewish Institute for Healthcare and Rehabilitation at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, New York. She comes to UAB from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, A.T. Still University of Health Sciences, Missouri, where she was assistant medical director of the Rehabilitation Unit. Jadoon provides geriatric consults for UAB inpatients and is helping to develop the Acute Care for Elders Unit at UAB Highlands. In addition to her interest in improving care for older hospitalized adults, she has clinical and research interests related to nutrition, memory loss, osteoporosis, advance directives, and end-of-life care.

NEPHROLOGY

Dana V. Rizk, MDDana V. Rizk, MD, has accepted an appointment as assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Nephrology. Rizk received her medical degree from the American University of Beirut. She did her internship and first year of residency at St. Louis University Hospital and her third year of residency at Emory University Hospital, where she also served as chief resident and completed a nephrology fellowship. She then was assistant professor at Emory University Hospital and its affiliated Atlanta Veteran's Affairs Medical Center. She is board certified in internal medicine and nephrology. Her primary research interest is study of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease. Her clinical interest is risk factors for the progression of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease and the application of potential therapies to slow disease progression.

PEDIATRIC SURGERY

Oliver J. Muensterer, MD, PhDOliver J. Muensterer, MD, PhD, has accepted an appointment as assistant professor of surgery in the Division of Pediatric Surgery. Originally from Canada, Muensterer received his LMCD from the University of Alicante in Spain and his MD and PhD from Ludwig-Maximillians University in Munich. He completed a radiology internship at University Hospital of Munich and a general surgery residency at both Washington Hospital in Washington, DC, and Chirurgische Klinik Nussbaumstrasse of the University of Munich. He completed residencies in pediatrics at Duke University and in pediatric surgery at the University of Munich. Muensterer also was a fellow in pediatric endosurgery at Children's Hospital of Alabama from 2004 to 2005. He is a member of the teaching faculty of the Ludwig-Maximillians University Munich-Harvard Medical School Alliance for Medical Education. He is the author or coauthor of numerous journal articles and abstracts and is a respected international lecturer on pediatric surgery.

PRIME CARE

Michael J. Geer, MDMichael J. Geer, MD, has accepted an appointment as assistant professor of medicine in Prime Care. He received his MD degree from UAB School of Medicine. He then completed an internship and internal medicine residency at Ohio State University Hospitals in Columbus. From 1995 to 2000 Geer was in private practice with the Montclair Internal Medicine Group at Baptist Montclair Hospital, now Trinity Medical Center. Since 2005 he has been the medical director at Kirkwood by the River Retirement Community.

 

Ravina V. Kadam, MDRavina V. Kadam, MD, has accepted an appointment as assistant professor of medicine in Prime Care. She received her MBBS degree from Mahatma Gandhi Medical College, Mumbai, India, and completed an internship there. She then completed an internship and residency at University Hospitals and Clinics of the University of Missouri, Columbia. Before joining UAB Kadam was assistant professor of internal medicine at University of Missouri.
