UAB Synopsis, Vol. 28, No. 16, April 27, 2009

Specially priced air evacuation memberships are available to UAB-affiliated faculty, staff, and students from a partnership between UAB’s Critical Care Transport (CCT) and Birmingham-based Air Ambulance Card, LLC. Members who are sick or injured 150 miles or more from home will be flown home by the CCT to the hospital of their choice.

“UAB people want to be treated by UAB experts,” CCT Medical Director Kevin S. Barlotta, MD, says. “When we can send our jet to pick them up and fly them home for treatment, it’s a win for us, for the hospital, and for the patient.”

To enroll at special rates or find more information, visit www.AirAmbulanceCard.com/uab and sign in with a valid UAB e-mail address. “Membership in Air Ambulance Card eliminates concerns about the high cost of a medical flight,” says Stan Bradley, managing director of Air Ambulance Card. “Members can come home to UAB aboard a UAB jet, and the member patient never receives a bill.”

Memberships cost $130 per year for individuals and $200 per year for families — a discount of more than 30%.

UAB SYNOPSIS:  "For 25 Years CCT Has Trailblazed Care for Patients in Motion"

... "I really had no idea how critical my coniditon was at the time.  It was only when my children explained more details to me in the following days that I began to appreciate the great lengths taken by the UAB flight team in getting me safely to Birmingham." - CCT Patient

There was this urban legend in the early days that if you shocked a patient on the aircraft, everyone on the aircraft would receive a jolt.  This gave us pause as we especially wanted the pilots to possess their full faculties at all times.    Metal stretcher connected to a metal base attached to an airplane made of lots of metal - hmmm...this is plausible.
