The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is overseeing the cancer Biomedical Information Grid (caBIG), an effort designed to share data throughout the international cancer community. The project’s aim is using data sharing to simplify scientific and clinical collaboration, speed new therapies from bench to bedside, and ultimately, to realize the goal of personalized medicine. Last week the director of the NCI recognized a UAB team of information technology experts with the caBIG 2009 Deployment Award, given in acknowledgment of the major initiative undertaken by the team to adapt UABgrid, our existing high-performance computing infrastructure, to interface with caBIG tools and infrastructure. The team’s pioneering efforts have contributed substantial knowledge about the adaption process.
