UAB Synopsis, Vol. 28, No. 33, September 7, 2009

Dr. MontgomeryJohn N. Whitaker Professor and Chair, Department of Neurology, Ray L. Watts, MD, announces the appointment of Erwin B. Montgomery Jr, MD, as professor of neurology and the Sigmund Rosen, MD, Scholar in Neurology.

Dr. Montgomery received his MD degree from the State University of New York School of Medicine, Buffalo, where he also was a fellow in the Laboratory of Neurophysiology directed by Sir John Eccles, DPhil, who won a Nobel Prize in 1963. He then completed his internship in internal medicine and residency in neurology and a fellowship in motor neurophysiology and movement disorders at Barnes Jewish Hospital School of Medicine, Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri.

Dr. Montgomery served as staff neurologist for 6 years at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation (CCF). In 2002 he completed its Executive Program in Practice Management. During his tenure at CCF he also was staff neuroscientist at the Lerner Research Institute, codirector of the Center for Functional and Restorative Neuroscience, director of the Movement Disorders Program, and director of the American Parkinson Disease Association Advanced Center for Research.

Dr. Montgomery comes to UAB from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he was professor of neurology. He also was an adjunct professor in the departments of Biomedical Engineering and Communicative Disorders and an affiliate scientist at the National Primate Research Center in Madison.

He was director of the Movement Disorders/Deep Brain Stimulation Program and medical director of the American Park- inson Disease Association Information and Referral Center.

A prolific researcher and author, Dr. Montgomery has participated in a broad range of NIH-, private-, and industry-funded investigations and has authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. He coauthored Principles of Neurological Diagnosis (Little, Brown: Boston, 1986).

He has a patent for a neuron signal analysis system and method, and has invented automated monitoring systems licensed to Medtronic, Inc (Minneapolis, Minnesota), FHC, Inc (Bowdoin, Maine), and the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Udall Center for Research in Parkinson Disease at the University of Pittsburgh, the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Neuropharmacology, the Scientific Advisory Board of the American Parkinson Disease Association, and the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry.

Dr. Montgomery has been a member of the NIH study section Brain Disorders and Clinical Neuroscience Special Emphasis Panel and a grant reviewer for the Michael J. Fox Foundation.

The American Parkinson Disease Association awarded him the Roger Duvoisin Fellowship for 2004 to 2005. He has been featured on the Best Doctors in America list since 2001 and has been recognized for excellence in teaching on several occasions.

His primary research interest is the study of how the brain controls movement and what happens to the neuronal control in conditions such as Parkinson disease. His research encompasses animal studies, clinical trials, and computational modeling, focusing on mechanisms of deep brain stimulation.

Dr. Montgomery’s clinical interests are advancing technology and indications for deep brain stimulation surgery as well as medical treatment for movement disorders such as Parkinson disease.

He can be reached at 205.934.0683 for patient appointments and at 205.996.4039 or emontgom@uab.edu for academic and administrative inquiries.
